Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai was an Indian physicist, industrialist, and innovator who is considered the "Father of the Indian Space Program." He was born on August 12, 1919, in Ahmedabad, India, into a wealthy and well-educated family. Sarabhai received his early education in India, and then went on to study at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom, where he earned a degree in natural sciences. After returning to India, he completed his PhD in cosmic rays at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. In the 1940s, Sarabhai recognized the potential of space technology for India's economic and social development and established the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad.
